Recently I read this article stating that Harry Potter collections are worth a pretty penny these days if you have books with the right criteria (signed or first editions). Sadly my copies are not of the money maker variety but they still hold a lot of value!
At Christmas time I was at my parents' house with the family and my son. We were having a splendid time and stayed up until Santa was on the east coast according to the NORAD Santa Tracker. When it was time for my son to go to bed, I realized that I had forgotten to pack any of the books he likes to read at night. Frantically, I searched my old room, my brother's and the media room. Finally, I came upon the Harry Potter series and decided that it was time for Kyan to experience the adventure and for me to relive it.
Kyan was hooked instantly! We decided to read the first book and then get back into our other series about a doberman that gets into all kinds of trouble. When we got home from the library with the next dog book, we read one chapter and Kyan said "No, let's go back to Harry Potter, mom."
Every night he is happy to be tucked in because he knows we get to continue the tale. He giggles at the way I make the voices but I don't care. We're nearly through with the third book (he falls asleep after only a paragraph sometimes) and he is amazed at the size of it, and the fact that they get bigger!
It has been a lot of fun so far, sharing these books that I loved when I was younger. I love seeing him smile and react to the story. I love that he tries so hard to stay awake sometimes so he can know what happens. That is the value that these books hold for me, it's the real value of reading to your kids.
